We all know how to talk, but how many of us know when to talk and when to keep silent? We are all conditioned to jump in as soon as there is a lull in a conversation. We fill our lives with noise and chatter. But being comfortable with silence is an art and takes practice and self-control. Once you master this art is when you understand how very powerful silence can be. Silence will help you get in touch with your true inner self and quiet the mind, allowing for greater peace, equanimity and truth.

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass – grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.

Mother Teresa

Make silence your ear-rings, and compassion your wallet; let meditation be your begging bowl. Sew this body a your patched coat, and take the Lord’s Name as your support. Practice such Yoga, O Yogi. Just like a Gurmukh, enjoy meditation, austerities and self-discipline. Apply the ashes of wisdom to your body; let your horn be your focused consciousness. Become detached and wander through the city of your body; play the harp of your mind. Enshrine the five elements within your heart and let your deep meditative trance be undisturbed. Says Kabeer, listen, O saints: make righteousness and compassion your garden.

Guru Granth Sahib

In the attitude of silence the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself intocrystal clearness. Our life is a long and arduous quest after Truth.

Mahatma Gandhi

The mystic realizes the power of the word, and at the same time the splendor of silence. The word can do so much, but even more can be accomplished by silence. Great phenomena are produced by the mystics, who know the power of the word, and how to use it. But, even greater miracles are performed by them through the splendor of their silence.

Sufism

Silence is a source of great strength.

Lao Tzu

Silence is the true friend that never betrays.

Confucius

He cannot be seen by the eye, and words cannot reveal Him. He cannot be reached by the senses, or by austerityor
sacred actions. By the grace of wisdom and purity of mind, He can be seen, indivisible, in the silence of contemplation. This invisible Atman can be seen by the mind wherein the five senses are resting.
