The Circle of Giving

Suruchi Honavar

Volunteering has seen a resurgence in recent years. While giving back to the people has always been an integral part of any community, there is a greater trend now among people of all ages and economic groups to give back to society in any way possible – through financial donations, or by giving their time and service to a cause.

Author-poet Maya Angelou has beautifully said, “I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.”

There are always reasons for us to not devote our time to a cause – most of us lead pretty hectic lives. We have families and children who take up our time, we have our professional lives, personal issues, health reasons … the lists are endless. But for every one of these reasons, there are many more in favor of volunteering; in contributing to society and its causes – in whichever way we can.

So for those who are not involved already, take the first step. Dedicate a few hours to your favorite charity or cause and see the difference it makes – in others’ lives and yours.
