Color your Space

Pandit Gopal Sharma

Vaastu recognizes the importance of color in bringing balance to mind and body and to stimulate energy.

Use of appropriate color in a particular direction can bring positive changes in our own energy levels, as well as in the smooth flow of energy in the house and workplace. Knowledge and use of Vaastu and Feng Shui guidelines in deciding the colors of doors, walls, ceilings, closets, lights, floor, drapery, furniture, paintings, etc. can enhance the lives of the inhabitants.

One should choose a color scheme that attracts and promotes buoyancy in life. Yellow or cream, and light grey symbolize the Earth element and are good colors to choose for the exterior of a house.

Bedroom

According to Vaastu, light shades of colors are always better than dark shades in homes. The color of the walls in your bedroom could be light rose, pink, peach, and light green as these colors promote intellectual attitude.

A bedroom is a place for rest and sleep, so it should be balanced with soft hues and tones to create a calming effect.

Living Room

It is the place to entertain guests, hence, it should be full of pleasing effects to maintain the mood and make conversation more lively and energetic. You can use colors like yellow, green, blue, beige or tan. Blue and green being nature’s tonic, are cooling and soothing, giving calm and peaceful vibrations, and are best utilized in the living room.

Prayer Room

Yellow, purple or light violet are the perfect colors for a prayer room. The color violet is said to enhance introspection and reduce depression, and is good to use in a meditation room.

Library

Colors such as green, yellow, purple and blue stimulate the brain and provide energy, so these colors are good for students and should be used in study rooms. Yellow is a powerful color as it stimulates the nervous system and cerebral activities, so its prime use would be in a study or a room where mental pursuits take place, such as a library.

Dining room

An orange-colored dining room will help to stimulate good appetite. If you want to enhance socializing, communication, positive feelings in your daily living, your dining room can be painted orange. The color peach can also be used as it gives a cool effect.

Kitchen

The kitchen is an important place and is dominated by fire. Therefore, any shade of red can be used in the kitchen. Shades of yellow, brown, light green and off-white are also good colors with the ceiling always in white.

Bathroom

You should use colors like white and light grey in a  bathroom. Relaxing, cool shades of blue are also perfect for bathrooms.

Children’s room

Young children tend to choose red, orange and yellow end of the color spectrum. These bedroom colors create a clear, bright environment and are also popular for play areas. Blue (light and warm) can often be useful to calm a hyperactive child. However, if your children’s bedroom is north-facing or lacking in natural light, blue can have too much of a sedative effect. Light green is one of the best colors for children’s bedrooms, in particular those with learning difficulties. Green has soothing, healing qualities. Green also lies in the middle of the color spectrum, and helps to balance the right and left brain and aids in fast learning. Pink is one of the preferred colors for children’s bedrooms and is a great soothing, loving color.

Color has a deep effect on our mood and can change it from melancholy to cheery, from anxious to confident, and from confused to a relaxed state of mind. Particular colors have different effects on individuals. Some colors can aggravate irritation while others may energize you. There are different colors for each direction of the house. If a color is not used according to its prescribed direction, you could see negative results.

In a small room, a light color gives the illusion of space. Also, if a room receives little daylight, painting it with a light color will improve it dramatically. If a room receives a lot of light, it is not advisable to paint the walls peach or yellow, though it is best to always have the ceiling white as this will reflect more heat and light into the room. The general rule is to use softer and lighter colors throughout the house to promote harmony.

Colors of the walls in the house should be coordinated with the colors of respective planets and elements associated with different directions. This will help in enhancing the energy flow around every individual in the house.
