Staircase: An Important Structure in Vaastu

Dr. Aarushi Sadhotra

Staircase is a structure which connects one floor to another. Stairs not only act as a bridge to join floors but is imperative in enhancing the interiors of a house as well. Ever since the concept of duplex came in vogue, stairs grew in importance many folds. But what is the location or direction one must look for, while constructing stairs? What should be the number of steps? Which direction should it start from and where should it end? What should be the movement on the stairs?

There are numerous queries connected to the ‘Vaastu for stairs’ and here are the solutions –

Positioning of a staircase

If staircases are not constructed in a definite place, they can constrain the flow of energy in the house. Energy travels from northeast to southwest, hence stairs should never be constructed in northeast quadrant. Only if the staircase is going to the basement, it can be made in northeast, else best is to build it in south, west or southwest. Northwest and southeast, are next best locations. Brahmasthan is another area of the house where a staircase is not suggested.

Number of steps

Number of steps should be such that when divided by 3, remainder should be 2. So having 5,11,17,23 and so on, are considered a good number of stairs. However, to keep it simple, steps can be odd in number and idea behind this is that, most people raise their right feet first to climb up, so they should also end the flight with the right feet so as to not feel any extra pressure on their left leg while ending the flight. Try climbing even number of stairs to understand this!!

Start and end of stairs

Staircase should be facing north or east directions, i.e. while climbing one should carry energies of north or east. Stairs should end facing south or west.

Movement of stairs

Staircase should always move in a clockwise direction. Most of the people are right handed and it is convenient for them to hold on to the railing on their right, while climbing up. Moreover when one climbs up stairs in a rush or running, right handers has an instinct of turning right but instead when they have to turn left, there is a chemical called adrenaline in brain which creates misbalance in the moving body. Try twirling clockwise and anticlockwise, which one is easily doable?

Colour of stairs

Lighter shades are preferred for the steps, white being the best. Black color is to be avoided as it represents absence of light and absorbs all the positivity around. Moreover, we tend to oversee the water spillage on the black surface which may cause accidents, while using stairs.
